The Silver Shawl A Mrs Meade Mystery The Mrs Meade Mysteries Book 1 edition by Elisabeth Grace Foley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This wonderful little cozy mystery has a likable protagonist, and boasts a refreshing setting in the latter days of the old west. The protagonist is Mrs. Meade, a middle aged widow with warm memories of the past who is also very sharp when it comes to mysteries.

The Silver Shawl is the inaugural entry in this cozy novelette series (longer than a short story, not as long as a novella). When Randall Morris arrives to see his bride-to-be Charity Bradford at the boarding house where Mrs. Meade lives, it soon becomes apparent something is wrong. No one has seen Charity since she left the previous evening to have supper with seamstress Diana Lewis. Sheriff Andrew Royal, loathe to believe anything bad could happen in sleepy Sour Springs, Colorado, then discovers she never made it to Diane’s. Soon a city detective — possibly a Pinkerton, though it’s not stated — named Edgerton arrives and the hunt for Charity takes on a new dimension.

This is surprisingly engaging and well-plotted, and Mrs. Meade doesn’t come off as your standard busybody, just a nice middle-aged woman trying to do a good turn. Her help in solving a mystery that involves kidnapping, a dead jewel thief, a silver shawl and young love, is deftly handled. Mrs. Meade, thanks to the way she is written, endears herself to the reader. It’s to the author’s credit that we don’t get that all too familiar problem of cozies, that she is simply a necessary device. Nor do we get the feeling that the setting is a gimmick. The Silver Shawl is warm and entertaining, and the mystery — something lacking in far too many cozies — is nicely written and plotted by the author.

I downloaded and read this last night because I'm savoring a bigger book I'm reading and not ready to let it end. This was the perfect distraction. I really enjoyed this and will be reading the others. It’s novelette length makes this cozy mystery series perfect for lighter fare between bigger books, or reading while taking a break. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys cozies, and likes having a go-to series for those occasions when they’re pressed for time, or simply taking a break from other matters. Warm, fun, and miles ahead of a lot of cozies because of the setting and the fact that the author has actually written a real mystery into the story. Nothing heavy here, just a nice treat when you’re in the mood.

The Silver Shawl A Mrs Meade Mystery The Mrs Meade Mysteries Book 1 edition by Elisabeth Grace Foley Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I did enjoy the setting a lot. I haven't read many historical books that were not set in Europe. It was like watching an old western.
It was a very intriguing mystery with some nice twists and turns.
The only downside was that I didn't much care for Mrs. Meade but I will read some more books in this series.
As a mystery, it wasn't very mysterious. There's too much extraneous information that doesn't help to develop the plot and at some point, it reminds me of the Agatha Christie stories, but this one doesn't quite make it.

The writing style was a bit simplistic and at some points in the story, the author appeared to be backed into a corner. Or maybe it's just my imagination.
I very much enjoyed the Mrs.Mead character, and the PI for that matter. I would have given a better rating if not for two things; one, I didn't like how the sheriff was portrayed, it would have been better just to leave him out. Two, I knew going in that this was a short story, but I still think there could have been more to the ending, it was very abrupt, a few more pages tying things up would have been better than what we got.
Short story. Mrs. Meade is an American Miss Marple.

Well-written, though this short story format does not allow for lengthy character development that was done by Mrs. Meade's similarity to Miss Marple. Enjoyable.

I would read the next in the series if it was available thru my Unlimited subscription.
The Silver Shawl A Mrs. Meade Mystery (The Mrs. Meade Mysteries Book 1) Ready for a "gentle" cozy mystery, one that is clean, with no sexual hanky panky or bad language? This would be it. It has kind of an old time feel, even as it is set back in an earlier day. And Mrs. Meade really wasn't playing detective at all, but was just on the periphery of the action. Still, it was a pleasant way to spend an evening with a good book.
I found this book and Mrs. Meade herself thoroughly enjoyable. It could have been written by an author in the early part of the last century, which I'm sure is Ms. Foley's intent. Think Agatha Christie or Mary Roberts Rinehart. It’s not just that the character and story brings those early twentieth century writers to mind, it’s that the writing sounds like that period. It matches the story perfectly and adds to it.

When a young woman disappears from a boardinghouse and is shortly after suspected of being a criminal who ran away to avoid discovery, Mrs.Meade doesn’t accept the easy explanation of events. She spots clues missed by a professional investigator and the local police, solving the mystery of who the girl is and what happened to her. The Silver Shawl is a great beginning to what promises to be a very entertaining mystery series.
This was a fun book! It reads more like a period story than a piece of historical fiction--omniscient narrator, flowery description, and all. Actually, I didn't mind the narrator, but the description was a bit much for me in the beginning. Once the story really got going, though, I didn't have as much trouble with it.

Mrs. Meade seemed like a strange choice for a heroine at first, but she ended up a surprisingly good one. I loved her calm, quiet deductions and explanations; it reminded me quite a bit of Sherlock Holmes, only with a much gentler, more sympathetic personality. It was also really refreshing to read a mystery that didn't revolve around a murder for once! My track record of not being able to solve the mystery on my own continues strong (no surprise), but I was proud of myself for catching one of the clues early on--even if the author did have me convinced I was wrong!

When I picked up this story for free, I had no real intention of continuing the series, but after this, I may just have to! Score one for the author; I think she's got me hooked. )
