I won't do what so many other reviewers do and outline the story here. (And I can never quite understand why some feel the need to give such detail in a review, given that the point of reading a book--in this genre particularly-- is to be surprised and engaged by the plot and characters.) What I can tell you is that if you enjoyed the likes of the Hunger Games trilogy and the Divergent series, then you will be delighted to find a similarly engaging and smart read in Jen Brody's wonderful debut novel. This was one of those night-time reads where I found it just too easy to keep delaying putting the light out as I told myself, "Just one more chapter," then "Just one more chapter." That's the measure of a master storyteller, in my book (excuse the pun!)
Not least, I enjoyed the fact that I could see so many parallels with our lives today, with so-called "experts" who have established rules and restrictions that keep us from realizing our authenticity and deeper growth as human beings.
I'm way beyond the age of "Young Adult" but am so grateful to this author for writing the first in what I trust will be a quality series, exploring the worlds and experiences of the protagonists Myra and Aero.

The 13th Continuum The Continuum Trilogy Book 1 Jennifer Brody Books Reviews
Some of my fondest memories involve a library, a book, and a tree. The library, guardian of the most precious of treasures, called to me every weekend. I explored its maze of shelves in search of the next fantastic book that would ferry my imagination to other worlds. Once I found that book, paper chest holding adventure and mystery, I reverently whisked it away into the boughs of one of my favorite trees. There, snuggled into the tree’s embrace, I lost myself in deliciously crafted words.
On rare occasion, I still climb into the branches of a welcoming tree to read, but only if a book invokes those memories in me. “The 13th Continuum” by Jennifer Brody transported me back to those days for many reasons Begin with the dire subject matter acutely relevant to our present and future young adults. Move on to the sweeping epic that houses it. Meet the brave youth who must shoulder an impossible responsibility. Discover secrets hidden a millennium ago before time runs out. Explore the unknown with only wits and determination. Find hope against all odds.
Jennifer Brody’s writing challenges young adult readers to expand their vocabulary and knowledge, while still being approachable and engaging. Everyone will find a character they can relate to, because the author conceived of them with an open mind and heart from the inside out. The book’s plotline never waivers in creating the appropriate tension and pace, driving the audience to claw for the next page. The opening chapter will capture their attention and hold it rapt as they realize they will be facing their greatest fear. The closing chapter will leave them wringing their hands and pleading for more.
Yes, this book made me climb a tree.
My only consolation now that I’ve finished it is there are two more!
Before you start this book, clear your schedule and have your snacks nearby - you won't want to stop reading for boring things like dinner. Brody has written an exciting exploration of a future world where life is very different from what we now know but people exhibit the same strengths and flaws that have defined humanity for centuries. With a smart, inspiring heroine and supporting characters who are both surprising and well-defined, this book is an enticing start to what promises to be a popular trilogy. My only complaint is that now I have to wait for Book 2 to see what happens next. Fans of The Magicians and The Hunger Games will know what I mean.
On the whole, I've grown disenchanted with dystopian YA, which all too often feels uninspired and routinized to me. But a friend recommended that I read The 13th Continuum, so I did.
And I'm glad I did.
Despite its post-apocalyptic premise, this book is spirited and even fun, lacking the deathly over-seriousness of most works in the genre. And it has some nice wrinkles, including the fact that it switches back and forth between two distinctly different societies with two distinctly different protagonists, which kept me flipping pages.
The premise of this book, first in a series, is that the Earth's surface has been devastated by a mysterious device referred to only as the Doom, forcing humanity to seek shelter in protected colonies that exist beneath the ocean, deep underground, and in outer space. After 1000 years, the Beacon held by each colony is meant to guide it back to the surface (or to the planet in the case of the outer space colonies) in hopes of repopulating Earth. Of the two colonies that are the focus of this book, the one beneath the seas has lapsed into theocracy and the one drifting through the galaxy has turned into a military oligarchy--and the rulers, perhaps needless to say, aren't keen on giving up their perks as will happen if their colonies carry out the original plan of repopulation. So while teenage girl Myra (in the submarine colony) and teenage boy Aero (in the outer space colony) fight to recover the Beacons and reclaim Earth, their respective leaders seek to block them by any means, including murder.
There were a few things I found inconsistent or implausible about the story--foremost of which was how easily Myra recovered a lost Beacon that, presumably, the rulers had been trying to find and destroy for nearly 1000 years. But the exuberance of the story and characters carried me past these minor "hm" moments. If you're looking for dystopian YA that feels fresh, this book (and the series of which it's a part) might be for you.
I won't do what so many other reviewers do and outline the story here. (And I can never quite understand why some feel the need to give such detail in a review, given that the point of reading a book--in this genre particularly-- is to be surprised and engaged by the plot and characters.)
