Taking the Bahari is a novel set largely on the east coast of Africa. Against the background of a newly created EU Intelligence Division, Andre de Bruyn and his exotic colleague, French-Moroccan Nicci Bassoul work to unravel the mystery of a vessel carrying dangerous cargo to a concealed estuary known to the pirates of Somalia. When it becomes clear that nuclear artillery shells are being traded in secret, the possibility of another horrific battle in the Horn of Africa becomes all too real. The action shifts from Zanzibar to Muscat and across the harsh deserts of northern Kenya, as the roguish trader Tejan Kabah and a vicious mercenary called Herman Rust struggle towards their destiny in southern Sudan.

“The book sits balanced on a knife-edge, between fact and fiction. The autonomous region of Southern Sudan has recently decided to succeed from the government based in Khartoum. But the future control of the Abiye oilfields has yet to be decided. For all we know, the events in this story are playing out behind the scenes, right now.”

Jacques Reynart lived and worked in Africa for twenty years. As a conscript in the South African Infantry, he served repeatedly in Namibia and on the Angolan border, both as an infantry platoon commander and working in military intelligence. He now lives in Melbourne, from where he continues to travel extensively in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Taking the Bahari is his first novel.

Taking the Bahari edition by Jacques Reynart Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a marvellous and gripping story told with meticulous attention to detail and geographic and technical accuracy. Reynart's expert knowledge of Africa and of military and diplomatic matters gives him a confident authority in his writing. He unfolds the story with fluency and verve, and his attention to the details of weaponry and descriptions of location never get in the way of the mounting tension and drama of the novel. The main characters are interesting and multi-faceted, but I have to confess that the appalling villain Herman Rust was my favourite. He is a both utterly chilling and entirely believable as a character, and one of the most sharply drawn and fully realised baddies of contemporary fiction. This book is worth reading just for the insight into the deranged psychology of a type that is still all too common in southern Africa today. It is much more than that, though, and if you are looking for an engrossing thriller that takes you into the heart of the struggles of contemporary Africa then look no further.
