I did feel kind of stupid when reading certain passages because I'm accustomed to skimming and just wasn't getting it. This book I had to read slowly and engage most of my brain. Also, about a third of the way thru, I decided I needed to stop and re-read the previous book first to refresh myself with that "universe" and the characters, some of whom are in this follow-on. That helped a lot.

Despite my appreciation for this book, I wish there had been a lot more detail about how Rafi and his friends and family were doing all those years later when !Spoiler alert! he is Patron. If the author writes a follow-on, I sure hope she includes more info. I felt left with a big lack of resolution.

The Galaxy Game A Novel Karen Lord 9780345534071 Books Reviews

Chaotic! I do not know what story this book was trying to tell. I would not recommend this book at all.
Great new universe created here by Karen Lord. Highly imaginative and entertaining.
Karen Lord is not an author for dummies. The places where the action takes place are extremely well developed. There is rarely a time when one feels a need to reread a passage. Still she casually slips a bit if information into the story that later becomes vital. Instead of finishing her books and putting them down I find myself reading them again immediately. I want to be back in that place she took me to. I want to be sure I haven't missed anything she has offered. She's my current favorite author.
I love Karen Lord's writing, they are lush, descriptive, engaging and believable - her books are frequent gifts to my friends who read SciFi and maybe unaware of her.
Too many characters, planets, intergalatic officials. I couldn't keep track of the story.
I had no particular assumptions when I started this book. I closed it knowing I had been in the presence of true talent. Comparing it to anything is a bit unfair but perhaps the work of Ursula Le Guin or Azimov .would be the most apt. Full of mystery and characters in different worlds I had to think to keep up but oh I so wanted to keep up this book made me stretch and put it down and wrap my head around new concepts it was a great adventure
I've read and liked novels by Karen Lord before but this one confused me a bit. The title and back matter suggest a game that should have a great amount of weight on the novel, and I never felt that it got there- the whole thing was about politics and under-explained psionic qualities of characters (that maybe are more explained in Best of All Possible Worlds which I read so many years ago, but I didn't think this was advertised as a sequel or companion novel). Nor did I ever quite understand how the game worked and how...it was used to transport people? It was still an interesting read, but not exactly the read that was advertised.
